Do The Math & Be Amazed!!!

EJ Gold, Architectural Sculpture, aluminum on Wood Core, 2012

Do the math and be amazed!!! That’s my Battle-Cry. It’s what I say when I show a coin to someone, especially a noobie or novice. So they look at the coin. I tell them to look real closely, to notice that the coin is very bright and shiny, that it has no scratches or scuffs anywhere on it, not anywhere, front or back. I don’t make an issue of “obverse” and “reverse” with a novice. “It looks like new, doesn’t it?” I prompt. “But read the date!” When they do, they generally gasp, if they’re also show the more typical version of the same date penny. Okay, now the clincher: “Do the math and be amazed! For how many years has that coin been knocking around in circulation?” When they do the math, they will be amazed. And that’s the effect I’m after. I’ll be offering a number of freshly-discovered “Do The Math & Be Amazed” pennies at today’s ICW — most of them at only $1 — some of them have additional value, but since they’re self-found out of bank boxes, what the heck-darn, eh?

Jesus and the Maccabees

EJ Gold with Architectural Sculpture, 11′ x 10′ x 3′, started 2007, completed 2012

I’ll explain why I’m concentrating on a nicer grade of Jewish coinage, from about 120-44 B.C., and why they fulfill both sides of the coin so to speak, of my Pocket Charms. First of all, the Pocket Charms come in an archival acrylic capsule, held in place by an equally archival foam ring. The thing is virtually indestructible, but it’s not a keyring, it’s a Pocket Charm, so handle with respect & care.

Catch O’ The Day

EJ Gold Acrylic on Canvasboard, 8″x10″ Collection of the Artist.

“Catch O’ The Day”. That’s how I envision the wooden shingle hanging below the Big Sign on the tiny coin shack somewhere in the midst of a wondrously attractive tourist town like Martha’s Vineyard, Woodstock, Jamestown, Williamsburg, Gettysburg, Carmel, Laguna, New York City or even New Palz. Anywhere there’s history, you’ll find coinage, and where there are coins, there are coin hunters — some with metal detectors, others with trading items, some with ready cash in pocket or purse. I’ll get right to the point — I have several dozen “Catches O’ The Day” sitting on my workbench presently. I’ve identified them, rough-graded them, examined and louped them and made comments about them on the dated “Magic Find” flip. These will be offered up for sale this morning at the ICW starting precisely at 6:30 Pacific Time. Today we’ll be trying to figure out a fair and equitable way to share out these coins and get them on the market. Most of my finds will sell at $1 or slightly more.

I Got Those Down-Home Mint-Error Ragtime Cowboy Blues

Legendary safecracker Jimmy Valentine is often quoted as responding to the question of why he only hit banks is “because that’s where the money is”. Actually, Jesse James, the very first open-air bank robber, said it first, and there’s good evidence that it was originally said by Asclepius in a drunken stupor. But all of them make my point accurately — go where the money is. I’ll explain:

Stumped? Puzzled? Don’t Know What To Do Next???

Stumped? Puzzled? Don’t know what to do next? Simple. Coin Search. But if you don’t know what to collect, what’s the point? So I have a simple solution. AutoSearch. You get six specially handmade “Catchers”, each with a target date on it. Collect all 12 for a complete spread of all major mint errors and doubled dies. Just toss the coin into the collection box and keep searching. It works itself, nothing to know, nothing to learn. Unless, of course, you want to collect on what you’ve found. Then, it’s workshops, workshops, workshops and then, application and more learning. Ignorance does NOT pay, and it isn’t Bliss, not really. I’ll post my AutoSearch Coin Catchers under the usual “insaneinvestor” slots — in investor’s emporium, on eBay.

Mystery Bags

All the coins in my shop, The Penny Store, are certified circulated; what that means is that they are absolutely guaranteed to be used business-strike coins that have been lifted out of circulation, where they’ve been since they were minted or shortly thereafter. I say “shortly thereafter” because they are beautiful. Some are bright and shiny, as if they’d just popped out of the mint machine. Others are amber, honey, mahogany and drenched with an unusual and hard-to-find eye-pleasing inner glow and natural patination. Still others have something weird going on with them, or they’re victims of Mint Error, which generally translates into market value and desirability. In any case, each and every one of these coins will make you stop and stare and wonder “How in the world did you get here?”
