I have made introductory coinology.org training packets for individuals and families. You start out with the Beginner Collection — it’s only $29.95, which includes the folder-style album, “Lincoln Memorial 2”.
The Beginner Set can be completed in about half an hour by an experienced coinologist.First timers will take about an hour to two hours to complete it. A family working well together can do it in about 15 minutes!

This takes you from 1959 through 1998, the duration of the Lincoln Memorial back on the American Cent. Most of the coins in this group will be on the dark brown side the further back in time we go. If you want better coins in better condition, send for the next set:
BEGINNER COLLECTION SET II PREMIUM — $99
You get the coins necessary to fill the folder, “Lincoln Memorial 1” which you get FREE with the kit, with the exception of the 1960, 1960-D, 1970-S, 1982 & 1982-D small dates; you know the drill — you gotta go get ’em yerself!
Here’s the Breakdown on what coin grades to expect in various collections:
Beginner I (Starter) Collection:
2000-2012 — Dependably brilliant, clean and clear, almost perfect MS circulated coins.
1990-1999 — Very bright, consistent high quality even in harder dates and mint-marks.
Beginner II (Intermediate) Collection:
1980-1989 — Mostly bright, fairly consistent quality with dips and breaks in harder dates.
1970-1979 — RB types, mostly red with a touch of brown, some scuffing, some scratches.
1959-1969 — RBs and you can expect to see some serious scuff-marks and blotches.
Beginner III (Advanced) Collection:
1909-1958 — RBS if you’re lucky; expect browns, browns, browns, unless you want to pay a high and unnecessary premium. Don’t make a collection of high-grades. Put high-grade coins in slab collections, not album or folder collections!
Remember that the further back in time you travel with coins, the less red and more brown they’ll get. My general plan is to start by helping you learn how to handle coins, just handle them.
Then we’ll learn how to look at them.
After that, we’ll learn how to consider them, weight them in our minds, value them.
Soon, we’ll be learning how to spot a valuable coin in a heap of crap coins.
From then on, you’re on your own!!!
