Crafting Songs for the Cloister Auxiliary
I’ve been at work creating songs with my poetry and the occasional free-verse. Well, that’s the news. Just kidding, there’s more… much more.
Tonight was all about taking inspiration and turning it into music, song by song. I set out to create a few new tunes that speak to different aspects of the projects and passions I’m sharing with the community, and the results were nothing short of inspiring. Here’s a look at what we worked on:
1. Songs with Purpose
We kicked off the evening with a song aimed at bringing more attention to my book, Human Biological Machine as a Transformational Apparatus. This one focused on how the book guides readers through self-discovery and growth, and the lyrics invite listeners to explore the deeper journey within its pages. The melody? Uplifting and motivational, a perfect match for the transformative message of the book.
2. Holiday Magic and Sterling Silver
From books to jewelry, the next tune turned the spotlight on the sterling silver abstract modernist pieces I’m crafting for the holiday season. We captured the idea that each piece holds a touch of magic—handcrafted, unique, and ready to become a cherished gift. The song has a festive, warm tone, perfect for the holiday spirit and for those looking to find a special gift with a little bit of magic.
3. Jazz on the Walls
Next up, we journeyed into the world of art with a song about the experience of owning a wall-sized jazz painting by E.J. Gold. This piece aimed to capture the feeling of bringing home a piece of living history—how a painting can turn a room into a story, filled with rhythm and color. It’s about the pride of owning a piece that resonates with both the past and the present, just like the best of jazz.
4. A Desk with a Story
There’s something deeply personal about a piece of furniture that holds history, and I channeled that feeling into a song about my good old teak L-shaped desk. This isn’t just any desk—it was once used by my father, Horace L. Gold, to edit Galaxy Science Fiction magazine back in the ‘50s. Now, I sit at it and carry on my own creative work. The song is a tribute to the connection between past and present, to the stories that flow through the wood as I write and create today.
5. Building Community with the Cloister Auxiliary
Of course, no evening of songwriting would be complete without celebrating the community. The Cloister Auxiliary, our group that meets on Zoom every other week to explore esoteric projects, inspired the next tune. The song is all about the sense of connection that grows even when we’re miles apart—how we gather to share knowledge, ask questions, and explore the mysteries together. It’s an invitation for others to join in and be a part of this journey.
6. A Virtual Road Trip on YouTube
Lastly, I turned to the digital realm with a song about my “Gorby’s Video Excursion” tours on YouTube. Picture this: a virtual tour bus that takes you through a series of eclectic videos, each one a stop on a journey through today’s world. Some videos might be whimsical, others profound, but together they create a unique story that unfolds before your eyes. The song is playful and adventurous, capturing the thrill of discovery and the joy of seeing where the next stop will take you.
Inviting You to Create Your Own Song!
After an evening like this, I couldn’t help but think—why not invite all of you to give it a try? You don’t need to be a musician or a poet—just bring your ideas, your experiences, or maybe even a memory that’s close to your heart. It could be about anything: a place you love, a challenge you’ve faced, or even a whimsical idea that’s been dancing in your mind. Maybe it’s about a project we’ve shared together, or something uniquely your own.
How to Get Started:
- Think of a Theme: What’s on your mind these days? A story, a feeling, a vision? Pick something that speaks to you.
- Write Down Your Thoughts: Don’t worry about making it perfect. Just start with a few lines or a chorus idea.
- Turn It into Lyrics: See if you can craft those thoughts into a verse or a hook. Remember, it’s all about expression!
- Share with Us! Whether it’s just a snippet or a full song, we’d love to hear what you’ve come up with. Bring it to our next Zoom meeting, and let’s celebrate each other’s creativity.
No Pressure, Just Fun!
Think of this as another way for us to explore, learn, and connect through our love of the mysterious and the creative. Who knows, maybe your song will be the next one we all sing along to.
So, will you join me on this musical journey? I can’t wait to see what each of you comes up with, and as always, I’m here if you want any tips or a bit of guidance on getting started!
Meanwhile, it’s time to board the Bardo bus for today’s video excursion!
Let’s go!
That’s plenty for today. I’ll be showing unpublished pieces of music on video at the morning meeting.
See You At The Top!!!
