Yep, that’s the idea — a free university, online in zoom, free to all — and for that, I need YOUR help.
Yes, you.
What, you thought others would come rushing in to support this very ambitious project? Well, they won’t, unless YOU do. That’s how it works.
Back in the twentieth century, I used to shop at our friends’ little market on Fountain Avenue in L.A. — Les and Mike Nicola.
I was a poverty-struck art student, and one customer paid $20 every week toward my groceries, in addition to what the Nicolas added to my shopping bag.
A few years later, Mike Jr. happened to mention the name of my benefactor — the comedian and TV star, Danny Thomas.
Next day, I was in the store, and at the meat counter was Danny Thomas, so I went over there and thanked him and said hello to his little girl, Marlo. If you’re in touch with her, please tell her hello from me — I haven’t seen her for ages, but I’ve heard her unforgettable and uniquely distinctive voice.
Marlo is now doing voice-overs for PSA (Public Service Announcements) for St. Jude Hospital, and one of the things that makes that hospital so unique is that the patients don’t pay a penny for medical care.
It’s all done by donations, and that’s how I plan to fund my free university, so the students don’t put out the cash — which they don’t have — and folks who have benefited from their education and made a good life can now give something back to the next generation.
And the next.
And the next.
And that’s the point. No ordinary education system that dates back to pre-online technology will survive the 21st century.
This is the major century of change. One of the major problems today is that the education funding for social and civic studies was all cut by the Trump administration, so there’s no ideals in place for government, and kids are not being taught the joy of duty.
Getting a job, raising a family and having a life are elusive goals right now, but we can work together, as a team, to solve that.
It can’t be done alone, and just two or three folks won’t change the world of education, but if we can work together as a team to build the university, we can actually bring about major change.
It starts with YOU.
I’ll put myself out on a limb, and offer some FREE classes of my own — and don’t worry about room — if this works out, we’ll be installing the professional zoom software so we can host thousands of people at a time.
We are already international, and can offer classes in the following languages:
- ENGLISH — Classes in Literature, Poetry, Composition, Playwrighting, and as a Second Language, and many more — most of our linguists have an international reputation in the arts.
- FRENCH — You can take classes in French Literature, French History and French as a second language.
- SPANISH — We have an abundance of Spanish-speaking teachers in our group, and all sorts of classes are available, from history to language dynamics and, of course, Spanish as a Second Language.
- GERMAN — With several teachers from which to choose, you can learn German language skills, and even gardening and poultry care, all in German, if you like!
- INDIAN LANGUAGES — There are 22 of them, and we cover at least 3 or 4, including Hindi, Gujurati, Punjabi, and several more. Many of our lectures are translated for listeners to follow.
We are canvassing our members to discover all the language skills available. I’m convinced that we can conduct classes in Scottish, Welsh and Gaelic as well, and Tagalog is one of my language skills, although I’m bigly rusty in that area, having not used it for well over 60 years.
But it’s more than intellectual knowledge we’re imparting and transmitting. Through zoom, we can present a wide variety of technical skills, including metal-smithing and beadwork.
I’ll list a few of the classes I’ll be able to offer just from my own skill sets:
- GUITAR — Beginning guitar all the way up to jazz, folk and blues guitar. I have zero skills in classical guitar, but we have at least two instructors to fill in that particular gap.
- DRUMS — I’ll be covering drums of all sorts, from UDUs and other African rhythm and percussion instruments, including my personal favorite, the djembe, of which I have three excellent examples, and lots of good information on how and where to buy them.
- ZEN FLUTE — I teach the zen flute on recorder, and the skills happen to include recorder skills, so you’ll be able to play anything from a traditional English ballad to a mysterious zen journey through misty jungles and deepest fog.
- BLUES HARMONICA — The blues harp is the most wondrous thing — put this tiny instrument in your pocket, and you’re an instant musician wherever you go. I cover all the major blues styles including Mississippi Delta and Mountain styles.
- KAZOO — Laugh if you will, but the kazoo is a mighty adaptive instrument, and entire routines and even full performance acts have been built on the kazoo.
- KEYBOARD — I don’t play keyboard, I fool around. If that’s your style, you’re in luck, ’cause that’s the only style I teach — instinctive and loose, brisk and bright.
- WATERCOLOR PAINTING — Not the strict and formal English watercolor, but more along the lines of German Expressionist, meaning lots of brilliant colors including deep black and a tendency to stay on the primaries, combined with the technique of “loading” the brush with several pigments at once. Expensive as a hobby, pays for itself if you turn pro.
- ACRYLIC PAINTING — I no longer teach oil painting, because I can’t take the chemicals, but I can do ANYTHING in acrylic that you can do in oils, and I show this and many techniques for producing saleable paintings. One of my paintings of my friend Herbie Hancock is in the National Gallery, and one is in a Royal collection, and many more are in very respectable private collections.
- SCULPTURE — Everything from elastic polymers to classical ancient clay models, I teach it all, from the bottom up, not assuming that you know anything about it. You learn all you need to turn out saleable sculptures on fine wood and stone bases and, yes, you have to make those, too.
- PHOTOGRAPHY — You can learn photography over the internet, and I can prove it to you, and the class is FREE, so you lose nothing! I teach basic photo skills, composition, and all the technical skills you’ll need to take the shot, plus all the things you can do in PHOTOSHOP to make them stand out and be unique. The PhotoShop classes are worth thousands, but they’re FREE to you in my FREE University.
- CREATIVE WRITING — I’ll not only put you on the path to being a professional author, but I’ll give you the lowdown on WRITER MARKETS and how to sell your stuff, what to write about, how to write it good, like you should. I also include some material on how to write advertising copy — again, worth the price of admission ten times over. You will be invited to participate in galaxyezine.org which is the online extension of galaxy science fiction magazine, with a wider subject matter and a bigger audience, some of whom are publishers who might pick up your story.
- ART HISTORY — Something you’ll really need if you plan to sell other people’s art. I cover art history both Western and Eastern — about 160 major cultures — and I start at the beginning, in Altamira and Lascaux in the West, the Shang, Zhou, Han, Sung and Tang Dynasties of China, and Mohenjo-Daro in the Middle, not to mention Sumer, Babylon and Jemdt Nassr.
- THEATRE — Acting skills, directing skills, stage management and lighting are all covered in this exciting and interesting course. Not only do you get the skills, but you get a platform on which to try your skills.
- PAINTED ROCKS — Painted rocks vary in size from just a few millimeters — a fraction of an inch — to very large semi-boulders for your New Age Garden. I teach how to make them, mount them in jewelry or on bases, and actually sell your painted rocks for actual money.
- METAL EMBOSSING — I show techniques for working copper and art metals of various types, as well as mounting and showing them, everything from small jewelry items all the way to deep-framed copper plates for the wall.
- METEORITES — How to find them, collect them, trade them and buy and sell them, as well as the secret methods of pricing your meteorites, which means you’ll need to know how to identify them, and that’s also covered in this unusual course.
- VIDEO GAME DESIGN — This includes all dimensions of game and level writing, and requires that you become an excellent gamer in order to be able to design levels that not only look good, but play well.
- GRAPHITE DRAWING — I have lots of skills in this area, and can duplicate most of the Classical Dutch and Flemish artists, but the real idea is to show technique and allow YOU to decide on the artistic style you’ll want to follow. Everything from photo-realism to extreme surrealism of the Dali variety.
- COMEDY — Not just a bunch of jokes — this covers acting, stagecraft, projecting, articulation, and most of all, the theory of comedy — timing your laughs, testing new jokes, finding great gags, putting your punchlines over, “reading” your audience, and much, much more — a challenging course for even the most hardy and resilient, demanding and tough, but worth the effort, if you manage to stay the course.
- VIDEO PRODUCTION — Simple video production that anyone can do with even the barest of technical skills and zero equipment or software beyond that of the ordinary user.
- CD MUSIC ALBUM PRODUCTION — I’ll be working with Oz on this — he covers the technical issues, I provide a critical attack on your skills and presentation until you get it right. If you’ve a delicate ego and think you have a great singing voice or instrumental skills, just wait ’til we get hold of you. A real learning experience, truth to power.
- SIMULATION SPORTS — I teach sim golf, flying, boating and movements, all in the Ashram, and so can you, if you advertise your classes in my FREE University.
- DIDGERI-DOO — Anyone can learn to play the didge, but I teach didge healing — not interested in using them merely for entertainment. You can also use the didge to alter the states of consciousness of yourself and your audience.
- RING MAKING — I teach an ancient method of making a gemstone ring out of wire WITHOUT ANY SOLDERING OR GLUING — something thought impossible by modern jewelers. I can make engagement rings, and all manner of magical rings.
- WAND MAKING — How to make and imbue magical wands and how to make walking sticks, staves and other wooden implements and magical gear.
- PAST LIFE COACHING — I teach a class in how to coach past life training and make a living from it. You will need marketing skills to go with this training.
- GAMING THERAPY — Get some relief from Trump World Jitters by gaming with us — we teach you how to download the game, install it, and how to actually play it and have fun with it for hours and hours every single day. You can get lost in other worlds and never have to re-emerge into the crud of TrumpWorld ever again. Keep gaming solidly every waking hour of every day until he’s gone, and you will regain your sanity and sense of humor.
- HOW TO RUN A FREE UNIVERSITY — Get online with us in zoom and find out how YOU can participate in our enormous and ambitious education project — it’s run kind of like a class, so I’ve included it here in this list of offered courses. The only difference is, you don’t graduate, you do something for someone other than yourself — you keep learning, and working for the benefit of others — something Trump will never get, and his followers will tag you as a “loser” and a “sucker”. They will never understand the full benefit of working for something higher than yourself.
- CANDLE MAKING –I teach the basics of candle-making, including how to create molds, and how to actually peddle your product in an already vastly overcrowded and highly competitive field.
- HOW TO BLEND ESSENTIAL OILS — I show how to create magical blends of oils. Although the class itself is free, students are expected to cover the actual costs of the oils used in the lab portion of the course — the expense is spread over time, so it isn’t painful, but we have no donations to cover the cost of the oils, sorry.
- MINIATURE RAILWAY SETS — How to build a railroad layout and populate it with lights, people, landscaping, and buildings.
- DOLLHOUSE BUILDING — I help you get started in the field of dollhouse design and manufacture. You buy the dollhouse for around $400 and sell the finished dollhouse, with lighting and all furnishings, for anywhere from $1200 to many thousands, if you choose to design with Bedermeyer original miniatures, for instance. Yes, I can get them, along with Louis Quatorze and Empire furnishings, not to mention the tens of thousands of Queen Anne that you can easily find to complete your doll houses. I also cover where to find your market and how to sell these online.
- SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING — Don’t even ask what’s covered, because this field changes radically from day to day, and sometimes, as is happening today, from hour to hour.
- REMBRANDT & OSTADE — How to buy and sell Dutch and Flemish masterpieces without much money to fund your operation. Covers everything from how to detect a fake to how to properly mount and frame a 450 year old etching without harm to the piece. It’s not that easy, nor is it obvious.
- THE MOVEMENTS — Yes, I teach a full course in The Movements, and discuss the source and the secrets of this ancient practice.
- MEDITATION — I teach meditation that can be performed in public, in the workplace and in the marketplace, not merely seated meditation. Eventually, you’ll run out of Bodhi trees under which you can safely and quietly sit.
- SURVIVAL AND SELF-DEFENSE — Not my favorite subject, but in this age of private militias, you might just need to know how to fast-draw and hit the target every time.
- PORTRAIT PAINTING — How to draw, paint and sculpt someone’s portrait. You can sit in zoom for a personal portrait from me, for which I charge a free-will donation of whatever amount you care to give. It’s not about the money.
- FOLK SINGING & SONG WRITING — A complete and rather long course in songwriting that includes recording your songs, getting them sung by others, and developing a following of folks who like your songs and want more of them. It’s not that hard, but there is a catch — you have to actually TRY.
- STAGE MAGIC — This includes street magic, club magic and even a few major stage style illusions, like the vanishing Hummer, which I can demonstrate with a miniature, in my tiny broadcasting studio, meaning my desk. I will teach tricks and routines and then you get to try them right then and there with our group watching every move.
- COINOLOGY — This is an ongoing course and it changes every day, with the covid virus preventing anyone with an ounce of good sense from searching coins at this time, and maybe for a long time to come, at least with in-circulation coins. I’ve been searching old sealed bags of wheaties since the outbreak, and recommend you do the same. I have bags of unsearched coins if you need ’em, at about $450 to $500 a bag. I take no profit, that all goes to buy the things. If you want to build a collection, I can help you get started safely, with coins that have not been touched for years.
- BEADS — Everything from history of beads right up to the present day, covering everything from ancient clay and stone and glass beads all the way to the latest Color-Changing Mood Beads and polymer creations that you can make by hand. I like to give an overview of all bead types for the past 7,000 years, and I have examples of all of them, which I will show online during classes.
- SCIENCE FICTION WRITING — How to write great science fiction, and at the end of the class you get to write a science fiction story for publication on our ezine pages.
- CONSPIRACY THEORY DESIGN FOR WRITERS — How to develop a paranoid viewpoint into a conspiracy theory, includes how to develop a cultural basis for it and how to create a geo-political environment for your shared world adventures.
- CLOCKWORKS — How to make clocks — mantel clocks, desk clocks and wall clocks are explored and you will hand-make several clocks in the process.
- HANDPAINTED CLOTHING — How to handpaint clothing, where to find it, what to buy and what to NOT buy, how to sell your stuff for a decent price in a lousy garment market.
- PUPPETRY & VENTRILOQUISM — I teach the whole gamutlichkeit from masks and hand-puppets all the way to full-scale vent dolls, and I have a few pro models to show, plus hundreds of smaller hand-puppet vent dolls, some of which are for sale to students only. You learn to change and project your voice.
- IMPERSONATION — How to impersonate famous people. You learn to change your voice, your face, your postures and gestures and your entire personality, as you BECOME your comedy target right in front of God & Everybody.
- HORSE TRADING — Not with horses. You learn how to buy and sell and trade a variety of items in a wide variety of worlds ordinarily invisible to the average person. I take it that you’re not average, and we go from there.
- INK DRAWING AND WASH — Learning this skill is easy, but getting it further than the first few skills will be a challenge.
- PASTELS — This is a very difficult course, definitely NOT recommended for the impatient. I cover absolutely everything you need to know about pastels dry and wet, and everything you need to know about the specialized papers and safe fixatives you need to know about. We also cover marketing your pastel art, not an easy task.
- CHARCOALS — I learned my charcoal skills from Rico LeBrun, and nobody could do charcoals like him, not even Charles White III, from whom I also learned my skills. You will be able to produce the most amazing charcoals, this I promise, and I can teach this to absolutely ANYONE, no matter how inept you imagine yourself to be. You CAN learn, and I CAN teach it to you.
- FOOD SERVICE — A year-long program to teach the basics of high-intensity food service, including hot dishes, salads, desserts and much, much more, and I watch you try to prepare foods and critique your style as we go. Again, truth to power works best when trying to really master any art or science.
- CONSCIOUS GARDENING — I have lots of helpers to put this across and we’ll be making videos to back up the class learning experience. Lots of lab, but it’ll be YOU doing the planting and nurturing and harvesting on your own turf.
- RARE BOOK SELLING — I have about ten thousand RARE books, and YOU can market them without ever having to buy a single one!
- FINE ART SALES — You can sell paintings valued at tens of thousands of dollars, without having to own a single one of them, and you get a full 50% commission on all your fine art sales from our inventory. We have every known artist from Rembrandt to Hockney, and our prices are totally competitive with today’s rapidly rising art market. Art sales are at an all-time high right now, and are expected to continue until the fall of Western Civilization, which is weeks and weeks away, not to worry.
- ANTIQUITIES — I have a very large and interesting inventory of ancient artifacts, everything from marbles and bronzes to amazingly carved paleolithic stone pieces and incredible terra-cotta from South and Central America, the Middle East and Asia, and I mean a TON, which we’re in the process of photographing for market. YOU could be selling them for a very nice commission, and you need not own a single one of them in order to sell them!
- RARE PHOTOGRAPHS — I have a very large collection of original celebrity photos, many of them flat-signed, autographed with a pen or pencil, and my collection includes several thousand World War I and World War II original photos and two fabulous complete original albums, although they might be sold in a few days — there’s LOTS of interest.
- HOW TO COLLECT COLLECTIBLES — First of all, you have to know what’s the correct spelling of “collectibles” — it isn’t “collectables”, although there’s lots of arguments in favor of that. The real art of collecting is selling your collection. Don’t get hung up about it — have the fun of collecting, and then do it again!
- RECORD COLLECTING FOR FUN & PROFIT — Which records to collect and how to price them and sell them at a fair price, and still yield a modest profit — you get to track down some seriously obscure recordings and unique issues.
- LETTERING & PENMANSHIP — How to develop a READABLE style of handwriting and to create interesting lettering.
- SCRAPBOOKING — How to create a fine-art scrapbook without buying a lot of glittering junk to fill it up with commercial crap.
- FASHION DESIGN — Yes, I can teach someone how to be a fashionista and how to build up a website and social media to support that premise, but it’s up to YOU to master the social media to gather an audience of followers for your fashion sensibilities, and your own personal sense of style that’s going to make you a winner.
There are more courses that I plan to offer, but keep in mind that these are just classes that I’m offering — there are about fifty more folks here who are waiting for YOU to take the next step, which is to apply for entrance to PPFU right now, today!
How much is it to join?
