Today, I’m going to break my rule — no nudity on my blog — to bring you an amazing video of a ritual dance, performed to a fascinating violin interpretation of deFalla’s Ritual Dance of Fire. Well, she’s not actually nude…with more careful observation, I note a wispy, almost ethereal, thong and pasties. Okay, that’s beach-wear these days, so I’ll ignore the butt-cheeks and the full-frontal pulchritude. Here it is, then — after which I’ll show you a few incredible things that some very imaginative folks have done within the context of the sim worlds, notably Second Life. If you know your exotic dancing, you’ll note that there are very few repeats in her dance, with very few notable exceptions. Vanessa Mae was the artist for the soundtrack; the video was created and performed by Slappy Doobie. It was performed live at Ellie’s Burlesque Club in-world. Look for Virtual Burlesque for more.
And now, let’s look at some perhaps even more amazing performers on Second Life! Keep in mind that you’re not expected to watch the entire video — just enough to get the idea.
Here’s a LIVE virtual concert by U2 in Second Life. With enough money, you can have the avatars made to look like the actual band, and get the animations made to match the music.
Another famous band that has performed live in Second Life is Duran Duran. Here’s a video of one of their appearances.

VLB is Virtual Life Band — they’re popular inworld, and this is a good introduction to their virtual rock.
Christy Lowie is a jazz drummer. Here she plays jazz sax. Note the animations — they’re really good. The jewelry is clearly off-the-rack, as is the tie on the piano player.
It’s still very new to see an avatar performance, but it’s coming and it’s coming big-time and soon that’s all you’ll see. Avatar performers behave, are always on time, never miss a performance and can be turned off between times. Few divas live up to that promise. Here’s February 9, 2013 at Mapoo’s club.
I know what you’re wondering…is there LIVE theater in Second Life? You bet there is, and as soon as we work out the details, you’ll see Shakespeare and more!!!

Here’s an example of group dance, where the dancers slowly come into sync with the front lead team.
Superstar Suzanne Vega did an interview in Second Life — she sang her big hit, and got a quarter million hits on the video! John Hockenberry on The Infinite Mind hosted the show, and it was a huge success!
Jazz? There’s a very active jazz and blues scene in Second Life; here’s ChelseaMarie Noel at The Star Bar Martini & Jazz Club. It’s a very well-done performance in a very tight space.
I wouldn’t normally include this type of performance — too reminiscent of the lousy videos spewed out of the Lady Gaga Sound Factory, but theĀ animations are so smooth — I’d like to be able to hire the script writer to do our movements! Note that they used a fun house as their stage, and a carousel which reminds me of the revolving stage we performed on at Hullabaloo back in the day!

This is a tribute to the Temptations…it’s a bit over-produced, but it does get the idea across that a singing group can make good in virtual performance.
And, just to demonstrate the range of potential, I want you to see this… It’s not the only exotic dance on Second Life — I also noted a Sema Turn of the Whirling Dervishes!!! Here’s a belly dance that shows the potential of the medium.
