Back in the 1950s, my dad Horace, who was then the editor of Galaxy Science Fiction Magazine, one of the “Big 3” sci-fi mags of the time, wrote a story for an 800-word gap in the issue, with no time to beg a story from one of his stable of writers…it had to be written overnight. It was exactly 800 words. Short-shorts are very hard to write — trick is to hold the punchline ’til the very, very last moment, without “telegraphing” the ending. In a longer story, the ending doesn’t generally matter much.
The story, entitled “Biography Project” is included in our published collection of H.L. Gold stories, How To Write Great Science Fiction.
In the Biography Project, he explains how we can travel in time even though we can’t take our organic bodies with us.
This is essentially the problem for any Time Traveler, including you.
The solution is simple — pretty much as outlined in his so-called “sci-fi” story. He was just exploring a subject that in his day was not an open topic for discussion — extra-sensory impressions.
Time Travel is fun.
It’s a lot easier than you think, to travel in time, and there’s no limit on the temporal distance. It’s all about Spooky Action at a Distance, which Einstein is just waiting to explain to you.
It has to do with the teleport on Star Trek. It works by Spooky Action at a Distance, using an interlocking “coupling factor” popularly called “Quantum Entanglement” which is called in magical terms “The Second Law of Magic”, ie; The Law of Contact” which states “that which has been in contact is always in contact”.
The First Law of Magic? Funny you should ask. “The Law of Similarity” states that something which is like something else can influence that other thing.
Both Laws work stunningly well.
Of course, you run into other Laws while operating in any given Law pattern. For instance, you can’t outrun Murphy’s Law, which says that if anything can go wrong, it will.
